Kansas State Sweeps Volleyball Team

Against 12th ranked Kansas State, the Colorado State volleyball team lost in three straight, 30-25, 30-25, 33-31. The Rams move to 7-3 on the season, while Kansas State improves to 10-2.

Junior outside hitter Becky Sarauer led the Rams with 16 kills, while junior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley and sophomore outside hitter Tess Rogers each chipped in 13. Junior middle blocker Bri Frech led the team with 10 digs and four blocks, while Shirley hit a team-high .308.

Sarauer was named to the all-tournament team for the Rams, as was Shirley. Regan Hood from LSU, Valeria Hejjas, Lisa Martin and Lauren Goehring from Kansas State were also on the team with Goehring winning MVP honors.

Junior Lindsey Kerr played the match as a defensive specialist, playing her first match of the weekend, while freshman Kristen Karlik remained at the libero position for the third consecutive match.

Kansas State was led by Hejjas with 13 kills and senior Laura Downey-Wallace led all players with 14 digs. Katie Stanzel hit a team-best .375 for the match and Martin led the Wildcats with four blocks.

Colorado State scored first off a kill by Shirley and then Cari Jensen would tie the score. It was also tied at 2, 3, 4 and 6 before the Wildcats scored three straight, including an ace that bounced off the net. Down 19-15, the Rams brought the score within one off a kill and an ace by Shirley and a Rogers kill. KSU called a timeout and then score three straight to take the 22-18 lead and go on to win 30-25. Shirley had six kills in the first game, while Rogers and Sarauer each had five.

The Rams committed two errors to begin the second game, but tied the score at 3-3 off a block by Sarauer and Shirley. The score was knotted at 4 and 5 before Kansas State scored five straight to take the 10-5 lead. Five different players helped the Rams score five of the next seven points to bring the score to 12-10 KSU when the Wildcats called a timeout. The teams traded points until Kansas State scored four straight to pull out to an 18-13 lead when Hilbert called for a break. The Wildcats scored three more after the time-out to take the 21-13 lead. The Rams would score four of the next five and then KSU returned the favor to take the 26-18 lead when Hilbert used his final timeout. Sarauer got two kills and a block to help the Rams score five of the next six points to close within 27-23 and then she got two more kills for a 28-25 score, but Kansas State would score the next two to win the second game 30-25.

The score in the third game was tied at one and two and then again at 5,6, 7 and 8 when the Rams scored three straight points, two off blocks to take an 11-8 lead. Kansas State called its first timeout to regroup. The Rams scored one point off a Wildcat error and then Kansas State went on a five point run to take back the lead at 13-12. The score was tied again at 15 and 16 when the Rams would commit three errors to give KSU a 19-16 lead. The teams would trade points and the Rams tied it for the 10th time off a Sarauer kill. After being tied at 23 and 24, the Rams would score four of the next five points, two coming off Rogers kills to take the 28-25 lead. Kansas State scored the next three to knot it at 28-28. The score would be tied three more times when Martin for Kansas State would get the final two kills of the match for the 33-31 victory.
