Volleyball Sweeps BYU In Conference Opener

9/26/2003 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

PROVO ? The Colorado State volleyball team opened conference action this evening at BYU, winning in three straight games, 30-20, 30-20, 30-26 to improve to 10-4 on the year and 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Rams have now won 27 straight matches after winning the first two games. The Cougars fall to 9-4 and 0-1 in league play after the loss.

Juniors Katie Jo Shirley and Becky Sarauer led the Rams with 16 kills each, while juniors Bri Frech and Lindsey Kerr led with 11 digs each. Frech also led the team with five blocks, while junior setter Melissa Courtney tied her career-high with two solo blocks, doing so for the second time in three matches. She also had 46 assists on the evening.

"We blocked really well from the beginning of the match," said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "That helped give us the momentum early and I was very pleased with that. Our outside hitters (Rogers and Sarauer) hit really well tonight and did some great things in transition."

The Rams hit .313 for the match, and held the Cougars to a .123 hitting percentage. Colorado State also out-blocked and out-dug the Rams 11-8 and 42-37, respectively.

BYU was led by Kimberly Wilson with seven kills and Uila Crabbe and Lauren Richards led the Cougars with 10 digs each.

Tonight marked the third straight time the Rams have won in Provo and the fourth time in five attempts.

In the first game, the Rams jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off two big blocks by Frech and Sarauer and an ace serve by Rogers. BYU scored its first point on a tip by Hartsock and then the Rams rallied for five straight points, four off blocks to take a 9-1 lead. Serving struggles continued to plague Colorado State as it missed two of its next three serves and the Cougars closed to 10-3. On an overpass kill by Rogers the Rams would take a 10-point advantage at 15-5 and would go on to win by 10, 30-20. Sarauer and Shirley both had three kills for the Rams as they hit .241 in the game and Sarauer and Frech each had three blocks, holding the Cougars to a .000 hitting percentage.

The second game was tied at each of the first five points until the Rams scored two straight off a kill by Rogers and an ace by Shirley to take the 7-5 advantage. The Cougars battled back to tie the score at 11-11 off a Nielsen kill but three consecutive kills by Shirley, Sarauer and Courtney gave the Rams the 14-11 lead when BYU used its first timeout of the second game. Four of the next five rallies went to the Rams, with Shirley getting a block and two kills in the run to stretch the Rams lead to 18-12. Down 20-13, BYU called its final timeout and Wilson came out and hit a line shot for the BYU point, but the Rams would go on to win 30-20. Colorado State hit .383 for the game with Sarauer leading the way with seven kills.

After the long break, CSU again took the early 2-0 lead but BYU tied the score at 2-2 and 3-3 before Karlik came in and served four straight for the 7-3 lead. BYU would close within two, 10-8, after scoring three consecutive points, but at 12-10 Sarauer nailed three consecutive kills for the 15-10 CSU lead. The Cougars scored three straight but then the Rams got three of the next four kills to lead 18-14 and BYU used its first timeout. Three straight errors by the Rams made the score 18-17 and Hilbert called a timeout to regroup the Rams and they came out and scored the next three when Lamb called her final timeout with CSU leading 21-17. Brittany Hoff came in to serve four straight for the Rams before the BYU break and the Rams would go on to win 30-26.
