The Colorado State volleyball team, ranked 9th in the country, swept the New Mexico Lobos in Johnson Gym, 30-27, 30-21, 30-15 to improve to 15-2 on the year and 7-1 in Mountain West Conference play, while New Mexico falls to 7-13 overall and 1-8 in league action.
Colorado State was led by junior outside hitter Tess Rogers with 17 kills, while senior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon added 15 and junior outside hitter Casey Bauer chipped in 12. Cahoon, Bauer, senior middle blocker Bri Frech and senior setter Melissa Courtney all hit .400 for the match as the team hit .336. Sophomore libero Kristen Karlik notched a match-high 15 digs and Cahoon led the Rams with six blocks, including a one-handed solo block in the second game. Frech led the match with three aces.
?I was pleased with how our team played composed during the first game after a slow start,? said Colorado State head coach Tom Hilbert. ?We served with a lot of consistency even though we were on the road. It?s good we?re getting 25 attempts out of Katie Jo on the road and Tess played with a lot of focus. Casey has been really consistent and improving in Becky?s (Sarauer) absence so she?s going to make it interesting when Becky?s healthy again (sprained ankle).?
New Mexico was led by Kelly Therkelsen with 10 kills, while Chelsea Sondrup hit .545 (8-2-11) to lead the Lobos. Senior libero Adah Burke led the team with 12 digs and freshman middle blocker Samie Weber led the match with seven blocks. New Mexico only had one ace on the evening, by Sondrup.
After the Lobos scored the first point of the match on a CSU error, the Rams scored the next three off kills by Cahoon, Rogers and Downs, respectively, for the early 3-1 lead. New Mexico battled back to score four of the next six points and knot the score at 5-5, but the Rams scored the next three points, including an ace by senior defensive specialist Kimi Foytich. The Lobos scored five of the next six points to take their first lead of the match at 10-9. After the Rams scored the next two points, the Lobos went on a 7-1 run to take a 17-12 advantage. Colorado State scored four straight points, two off kills by Cahoon to close within one, 17-16, but Karlik missed a serve and the Lobos took the two point lead. After the teams traded points until 21-19, Rogers got a CSU kill to start a four-point run and give CSU the 23-21 advantage. The teams again traded points until 26-24 when Bauer and Frech got a block to give the Rams the three-point lead, which they held on to and won 30-27.
Rogers started game two with a CSU kill, but New Mexico tied the score at 1-1. Colorado State scored six of the next seven points, including the one-handed block by Cahoon to give CSU a 7-2 lead and New Mexico used its first timeout. The Lobos came out of the break and scored four of the next five points to come within two at 8-6, but Bauer got a kill and Rogers and Frech blocked Jennifer Heasty for the 10-6 lead. The Rams scored six of the next eight points, including one of Frech?s three aces on the evening to pull away, 16-8. After trading points until 21-14, the Rams scored seven of the next eight points to take the 28-15 advantage. The Lobos did not die though, and scored five of the next six to make the score 29-21 when freshman middle blocker Tonya Mokelki got the CSU kill for the 30-21 win.
Sondrup and Heasty got a block to start game three, but the Rams scored four of the next five points for the 4-2 lead. With the score 5-4, the Rams went on a 5-0 run, with points scored by five different CSU players for the 10-4 lead and a New Mexico timeout. Weber got a kill for the Lobos out of the break, but then Bauer got a kill and Courtney and Frech combined for a block for the 12-5 lead. The teams again traded points until 15-9 when the Rams scored seven of the next nine points to stretch the lead to 22-11 and the Lobos used their final timeout. The Lobos rallied to score three of the next four points to close within nine, 23-14, but after trading points to make the score 24-15, the Rams scored the final six points of the match -- with four kills coming from Rogers to win the match 30-15.
Colorado State will play tomorrow evening at Air Force at 7:00 p.m. before returning home for a Tuesday evening match against Denver. That match is also scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and is Professor Night, where the Rams honor their favorite professors before the start of the match.
