Tying a season-high with 11 aces, the ninth-ranked Colorado State volleyball team swept the San Diego State Aztecs, 30-18, 30-9, 30-20 in front of 1,304 fans in Moby Arena. With the victory, the Rams improve to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Aztecs fall to 3-19 overall and 3-6 in league action.
Senior setter Melissa Courtney established a new career-high and tied for eighth on the CSU single-match records with six service aces. She also moved up three spots and is now tied for fifth on the CSU career charts with 130 aces and needs just eight more to tie the school record. Junior outside hitter Tess Rogers and junior right-side hitter Dre Downs tied for match-highs with 11 kills, while senior middle blocker Bri Frech led the team with seven digs and senior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon had a match-high six blocks. Sophomore Kristen Karlik saw her first action this season as a right-side player and notched a career-high three kills, while sophomore Katherine Whitney got her first block as a Ram, as the pair helped run a 6-2 offense in the last part of the third game -- with each doing the setting while in the back row and hitting on the right-side while in the front row.
Cahoon tallied her 300th career block assist on the evening and now has 305 and tonight marked the first time this season an opponent has not tallied an ace serve against the Rams.
San Diego State was led by Ashley Bowker and Melissa Stapley with seven kills each, while Stapley and libero Kari Dykema led the match with eight digs each. Bowker also led the Aztecs with two blocks and hit a team-best .263 on the evening.
?This was a good match tonight for us,? said Colorado State Head Coach Tom Hilbert. ?Kara Moriarty got hurt and she?s a great player (for San Diego State) and as a senior in this league, I hope she gets better in a hurry. San Diego State has a very young team and she?s a great leader for them. Our goals were to stop Moriarty and Audra Dent and we did a good job on Dent. Bowker hurt us a little, but she?s a great player for as small as she is. Our serving was excellent. We hit placements and served tough. The 6-2 with Karlik and Whitney was very successful. I told them to set each other a lot and they did a great job of it. Both could be front row players for a lot of teams in this country.?
Colorado State continues Mountain West action tomorrow evening against UNLV. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and fans will receive admission for $3 with a CSU football ticket stub from the game against New Mexico which begins at 1:00 p.m.
