Rams Go 2-1 in San Antonio

The Colorado State softball team opened up the University of Texas San Antonio Fastpitch Express Tournament with a 4-2 loss to Kansas followed by two victories over Texas-Arlington and Missouri-Kansas City by scores of 5-2 and 4-3, respectively.
Senior Megan Masser pitched the complete game for the Rams, her third of the season. The loss dropped her record to 2-1. Masser struck out five batters, but the Jayhawks notched two homeruns against the senior that proved to be the difference in the game.
Sophomore outfielders Katie Dean and Carly Allen each scored a run for the Rams in the game. Junior Kerry Farrell knocked in Dean in the third inning. Dean also recorded an RBI, after she doubled in Allen in the fourth inning.
In game two the Rams defeated Texas-Arlington by a score of 5-2. Sophomore JayCee Wood picked up the win for the Rams, improving her record to 2-1 on the season. Freshman pitcher Jessica Strickland picked up a save, the first of her career.
Strickland also picked up a win in relief on the day, leading the Rams in a 4-3 victory over Missouri-Kansas City. Strickland (2-1) came on for the Rams in the sixth inning with the game tied at three.
Sophomore Melanie Laffoon, drove in freshman Brittany Huerta in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the Rams past the Kangaroos. Huerta doubled and advanced to third after a passed ball before Laffoon singled her in.
?Overall I think we did some good things, but we haven?t put together a complete game yet,? said coach Mary Yori. ?That is something that we will continue to work on.?
The Rams will conclude play in San Antonio with two games on Sunday against Bethune-Cookman at 9 a.m. and UT-San Antonio at 11:15 a.m.
