Laffoon Homer Propels Rams Past No. 25 Texas State

The Colorado State softball team upset No. 25 Texas State 5-3. The come-from-behind win highlighted the first day of the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. Earlier in the afternoon, the Rams also defeated Illinois-Chicago by a score of 6-1. With the wins, the Rams improve to 10-4 on the season.
After being held to just three hits early in the game, the Colorado State softball team broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning against Texas State senior left-hander Nicole Neurerburg, who pitched three innings of no-hit softball to start the game.
Junior Stephanie Roberts led off the sixth inning with a single to center field and advanced to third when the Texas State second baseman misplayed a ball off the bat of junior Brittany Burtner. Burtner advanced to second on the error. Ricki Walker drew a base on balls to load the bases, when Kerry Farrell reached on a fielder?s choice, and picked up the tying RBI as Roberts crossed the plate for the Rams.
Two batters later, with two runners on base, sophomore designated hitter Melanie Laffoon hit a deep shot, her only hit of the game, over the right center field fence to put the Rams on top for good.
Senior pitcher Megan Masser returned to winning form, striking out ten Bobcats, giving up six hits and walking only one batter in the victory. Masser?s ten strikeouts tied a career high set earlier this year in a win over Sacramento State. The win was also her fourth complete game of the season.
Against Illinois-Chicago, freshman pitcher Jessica Strickland threw a complete game five-hitter to improve to 4-1 on the season. Strickland struck out three batters in the win and did not allow an earned run on the day
Freshman Melissa Giesler drove a pinch hit single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to score Farrell and Walker and put the game out of reach for Illinois-Chicago.
Colorado State recoded 13 hits in the game, the second highest total of the season, including three doubles. Six different players scored a run for the Rams in the victory.
Five Rams had multiple hits in the game. Roberts and Walker each recorded three hits with Roberts going 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored, her team-leading 11th of the season. Walker added another RBI to her total, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Junior Brittany Burtner and Kerry Farrell added two hits and a run each to the Rams? totals. Burtner also drove in a run while Farrell recorded her fifth sacrifice hit of the season, the most on the team.
?I?m really happy with the way the team played today,? said Yori. ?We hung in there and kept competing.?
The Rams will continue play tomorrow at the Troy Cox Classic with games against Portland State and host New Mexico State at 2:00 and 4:00, respectively.
