CSU Splits In First Day of Rebel Spring Games

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Colorado State softball team earned a split in the first day of the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Rams squandered a 5-0 lead before falling to Yale in eight innings but rallied to defeat Dayton 8-0 in a five-inning matchup.
In the first game of the day, CSU put up two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run Brittany Burtner single that scored Jennifer Gardner and Katie Dean and then tacked on three in the next frame when Brittany Huerta drilled a two-run home run followed by an RBI single by Dean that scored Gardner to go up by five.
Yale then came back in the bottom of the inning managing six runs on five hits and two Ram errors to go up 6-5 after six innings of play.
The Rams came back in the seventh to tie the score at six-all when Ricki Walker earned a walk and eventually scored on a Huerta single to send the game to extra frames.
In the bottom of the eighth, the international scoring rule placed Yale shortstop Kate Meserve on second base. Following two walks to load the bases, the Bulldogs scored the winning run on a game-winning fielder?s chioce by Meredith Parks.
Kerry Farrell and Jennifer Gardner each went 3-for-4 in the game while Brittany Huerta was 2-for-4 with a home run to lead the Rams from the plate.
Jessica Strickland pitched six innings for the Rams giving up three earned runs and striking out two as JayCee Wood picked up the loss going just over an inning and giving up one run.
In game two, the Rams dismantled Dayton 8-0 in five innings. Colorado State pieced together eight runs on 14 hits and two Dayton errors to win its 16th game of the season.
CSU scored four runs in the first followed by three in the second while earning the eight-run win with a solo score in the fifth.
JayCee Wood pitched her first shutout of the season giving up just three hits on the day. Wood?s record on the season was improved to 4-2.
CSU (16-8) will face off against Liberty and Colgate on Monday evening in Orlando.
