The Colorado State softball team defeated Southeast Missouri State and Columbia by scores of 7-1 and 2-1, respectively on Thursday. The games were the first for the Rams at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., since having their previous three games canceled due to inclement weather.
In the first game of the day, sophomore pitcher JayCee Wood (4-2) held SMSU to just one run on three hits in five innings of work. Wood also struck out three batters in the game.
Senior pitcher Megan Masser returned to the Ram lineup to pitch two innings in relief of Wood. Masser had missed the Rams? previous eight games with an injury to her pitching arm.
Freshman Jessica Strickland led the way for the Rams' offense hitting two homeruns, her second and third of the season, and driving in five runs in the game including a three-run shot in the first inning, and a two-run homer in the fifth.
Junior shortstop Brittany Burtner also posted nice numbers for the Rams going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the second game, the Rams fell behind early, allowing Columbia to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Rams responded quickly, putting two runs on the board in the third inning on a two-run home run off the bat of Junior Stephanie Roberts, her fourth long-ball of the season. Sophomore Jennifer Gardner scored on the homer, after reaching base on a single.
Sophomore Genevieve Kelly improved her record to 4-2 on the season with the win over Columbia. Kelly allowed only two hits and struck out six batters in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Masser pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of the game, adding one more save to her career record at Colorado State.
Coach Mary Yori was pleased with her team?s performance. ?We played well as a team today,? said Yori. ?We played with a lot of energy after missing games because of bad weather.?
The Rams will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. on Friday when they take on Wagner at 8:50 a.m. followed by Bucknell at 12:30 p.m.
