Rams, Aztecs Split Pair of MWC Contests

The Colorado State softball team split at home with Mountain West Conference leading San Diego State Sunday afternnon at Ram Field. San Diego State held off the Rams 2-1 in game one, followed by a 2-1 Rams? victory. With the split, the Rams (33-12, 9-3 MWC) remain one game back of the Aztecs (32-19, 11-3) for the top spot in the MWC.
In game one a Colorado State error in the first inning, helped San Diego State jump out to an early 2-0 lead, and the Rams? bats could not bring the team back. Lead-off hitter Meagan Hartung singled up the middle, and advanced to third when the number three hitter, Janna Kovensky reached second on an error by third baseman Rachelle Padeway. Both Hartung and Kovensky scored one batter later, when clean-up hitter Kelcy Murphy singled past a diving Brittany Burtner at shortstop.
The Rams got one run back in tthe bottom of the second inning when catcher Kerry Farrell singled through the left side, and advanced to second on a Brittany Huerta single to left field. Pitcher Jessica Strickland loaded the bases, reaching on a single past the shortstop. Two batters later, Padeway reached on a fielder?s choice, and picked up an RBI scoring Farrell from third.
The Rams threatened again in the fourth and sixth innings, leaving a runner on base in each, but failed to come up with a big hit to tie the game.
Strickland suffered the loss for the Rams, giving up five hits and allowing only two runs, one earned, while striking out two batters. Senior Megan Masser closed out the final three innings of the game, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Masser and Strickland bounced back in the second game to lead the Rams to the win. Masser started game two, after closing out game one and lasted 6.1 innings, striking out six batters and allowing San Diego State?s only run of the game. Strickland picked up her third save of the season in relief of Masser, pitching the final 0.2 innings to preserve the Rams? win.
Once again, a Colorado State home run from freshman Brittany Huerta proved to be the difference in the game. Huerta, who was the only Ram with multiple hits in game one, only needed one swing of the bat to put the Rams on top in game two, belting a two-run shot to left field that scored Ricki Walker. The home run was Huerta?s 13th of the season, adding to her single-season home run record.
Masser held off an Aztec comeback in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out, forcing two straight fly outs to Huerta in left field.
The Rams will head out on the road next weekend, facing Utah and BYU. The Rams will take on the Utes in Salt Lake City on April 30, followed by a May 1 doubleheader in Provo.
