Ram Softball Picked Second In MWC Preseason Poll

Fort Collins, Colo. ? The Colorado State softball team, 2004 Mountain West Regular-Season Conference Champion, was picked to finish in a tie for second with BYU in the Mountain West Conference preseason coaches? poll released on Wednesday. This is the second straight season in which the Rams have been picked to finish second in the poll.

The Rams and Cougars (20 points) were selected to finish behind San Diego State (22 points), with all three schools receiving two first place votes each. The Aztecs won the regular-season championship in 2002 and 2003. Rounding out the rest of the poll are Utah (12 points), the 2004 MWC Tournament Champions, followed by New Mexico and UNLV who tied for fifth with eight points each.

Colorado State returns 12 of 15 letterwinners from last season?s squad which finished 40-14, eclipsing the 40-win mark for only the second time in school history. The team will be led by senior 2B Stephanie Roberts, 2003 MWC Co-Player of the Year, senior C Kerry Farrell, 2004 Easton First-Team All-American and sophomore P Jessica Strickland, the 2004 MWC Freshman of the Year.

The Rams begin the season on Feb. 3 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. with games against Cal Poly and Nevada, followed by the Mustang Round-up Feb. 4-6. The Rams and Aztecs will open up conference play against each other in a doubleheader scheduled for April 1 in Fort Collins.
