Rams Drop Two At Troy Cox Classic

The Colorado State Softball team fell to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners and No. 19 Nebraska Cornhuskers on the first day of the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. The Rams and Roadrunners battled to a 7-6 final, while the Huskers held off Colorado State by a 2-1 margin.
In the first game of the day againt UTSA, the Rams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a home run to left field by senior Kerry Farrell, scoring Stephanie Roberts, who walked to lead off the game.
Texas-San Antonio answered in the bottom half of the first with four runs. Junior Genevieve Kelly, who started at pitcher for the Rams, lasted only one-third of the inning, giving up four runs on three hits and walking four batters before sophomore Jessica Strickland came on in relief.
The Rams cut the Roadrunners? lead to one in the third inning on a lead-off home run by Roberts, then tied the game in the fourth. Roberts finished the game 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Julia Kloppe singled to right field to lead off the fourth and advanced to second on a walk by freshman Lauren Cusick. Freshman Molly Gallu pinch ran for Kloppe at second and Kelly, who was inserted as the designated player after leaving the game as the starting pitcher, singled to center field to score Gallu and knot the game up at 4-4.
UTSA would regain the lead in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring one run and taking a 5-4 lead. The Rams gained their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning scoring two more runs to take a 6-5 lead. Strickland singled to right field, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on the throw after Farrell flied out to right field. Kloppe then homered to left field, picking up two RBI, but UTSA tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Kloppe hit 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and one run scored.
With the score tied at 6-6, the Roadrunners added a run on a one-out single to left field in the final frame to put the Rams away.
Strickland fell to 1-2, striking out seven batters in 6.1 innings in relief of Kelly.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Rams faced the No. 19 Nebraska Cornhuskers in a low-scoring game.
Nebraska jumped out to an early one-run lead in the bottom the first. Colorado State answered in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one. Kloppe singled to centerfield, and advanced to second on a single by Cusick and, two batters later, scored on an error by the shortstop.
Nebraska regained the lead in the fifth inning on a lead-off home run. The Rams threatened in the bottom of the fifth when Brittany Huerta and Katie Dean led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Huerta advanced to third on an error by the shortstop, but was thrown out at home on a fielder?s choice by Roberts.
Junior JayCee Wood picked up the loss, moving to 0-1 on the season in the complete-game effort.
The Rams will continue action at the Troy Cox Classic on Saturday against host New Mexico State and New Mexico at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively
