Rams Rally Past Razorbacks

The Colorado State softball team improved to 4-3 on the season with a late-inning rally to put away the Arkansas Razorbacks on the final day of the Mustang Round-up Tournament in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Sunday. The Rams defeated Arkansas 6-4 after falling to the Razorbacks on Saturday by a 2-1 margin.
Colorado State fell behind early as Arkansas scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Rams answered in the fourth inning. JuniorJessica Strickland led off the inning with a triple to right centerfield and scored one batter later as senior Kerry Farrell singled up the middle to pick up the RBI.
Arkansas added another run in the fifth inning and the Rams retaliated in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Stacey Leigh hit a two-out double to right center, and scored on a single to left by junior Jennifer Gardner.
Down 4-2 heading into the final frame, the Rams rallied, scoring four runs in the inning to take the lead. Junior Katie Dean led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single to left field by senior Stephanie Roberts. Senior Brittany Burtner walked to load the bases, and Strickland was hit by a pitch scoring Dean from third. With the score now 4-3, Farrell singled to left centerfield to score Roberts and Burtner and give the Rams a 5-4 lead. A bunt single by Gardner scored Strickland from third base and gave the Rams a 6-4 lead.
Colorado State retired the Razorbacks in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Farrell and Gardner each finished the day 2-for-4 from the plate, with Farrell recording 3 RBI and Gardner notching two.
Strickland, who hit 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI on the day, picked up the win in relief of Junior JayCee Wood and improved her record to 1-1 on the season. Wood pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four funs on six hits, giving up two walks and striking out one.
Next up, the Rams will compete at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. from Feb. 18-20.
