Softball Splits In Final Day of Spartan Classic

The Colorado State softball team moved to 19-11 on the season after dropping a 2-0 decision to host San Jose State and then rebounding to shut out St. Mary?s 6-0 in the final day of competition at the Spartan Classic.
In the first game of the day, the Rams were held to just three hits, one each by sophomore LF Brittany Huerta, freshman 1B Julia Kloppe and senior SS Brittany Burtner, by San Jose State pitcher Carol Forbes. The Rams struck out nine times in the seven inning contest. Junior P Genevieve Kelly was in the circle for the Rams, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out four and walking none. Senior C Kerry Farrell threw out two would-be base stealers, bringing her season total to 13 and her career total to 70.
In the second game against St. Mary?s the Rams scattered 15 hits, while limiting the Gaels to just three. Senior 2B Stephanie Roberts led the Rams going three-for-three from the plate, including a double and two walks. Farrell went two-for-two with three RBI, along with a sacrifice fly. Junior RF Jennifer Gardner and sophomore P Jessica Strickland also had two hits each in the contest.
Strickland threw six innings, giving up no runs with three hits, striking out three and walking one. Kelly came on in relief in the seventh inning, giving up no runs on no hits, walking one and fanning two batters.
Colorado State will take a week off from action before returning to the diamond on March 29 at Northern Colorado for a double header starting at noon. The Rams will then have home contests, beginning Mountain West Conference play with double headers against San Diego State and UNLV on April 1st and 3rd, respectively.
