Softball Sweeps Northern Colorado

The Colorado State softball team, playing its first games in the state of Colorado since 2004, swept the Northern Colorado Bears this afternoon at the UNC Softball Field, winning 12-2 and 10-1 in the double header, respectively. The Rams improve to 21-11 on the year, while the Bears fall to 8-17.
Colorado State used an offensive explosion in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Northern Colorado got on the scoreboard first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second after a lead-off triple by Kati Miller. She then scored two batters later on an Ashley Martinosky single.
The Rams answered with two runs in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth inning. In the third, junior CF Katie Dean reached on an error and then was sacrificed to second base by senior 2B Stephanie Roberts. Dean moved to third on a single by junior RF Jennifer Gardner -- who advanced to second on the throw and Dean scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore DP Jessica Strickland. Senior C Kerry Farrell then hit a double to the right-center fence, scoring Gardner. In the fourth inning, freshman 1B Julia Kloppe singled and was followed by a single by senior SS Brittany Burtner. Roberts then tripled to the right field fence, scoring both Kloppe and Burtner.
The Bears scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within two, 4-2, but the Rams put eight on the board in the top of the sixth.
The entire Rams lineup was at the plate at least once in the sixth inning, with three players making two plate appearances. Junior Rachelle Padeway, Dean (two singles), Strickland (double), Farrell, Huerta and Kloppe (double) all got hits in the inning, while Roberts and freshman Molly Gallu walked and Padeway had a sacrifice fly.
Junior JayCee Wood pitched five innings for Colorado State, giving up two runs on five hits, with five strikeouts and two walks. Strickland came on in relief in the sixth inning, setting the Bears down in order.
The Rams continued their strong offense in the second game, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Roberts singled and then stole second base. Gardner walked and then she and Roberts committed a double-steal. Strickland reached second on a two-base error by the third baseman, scoring both Roberts and Gardner. Farrell and Huerta then had back-to-back singles, with Strickland scoring on Huerta?s hit. Kloppe hit a double that bounced off the yellow protection on the top of the fence, scoring both Farrell and Huerta and Dean singled to score Kloppe for the six runs on five hits in the inning.
In the top of the second, the Rams added another run when Gardner scored off a single by Farrell. Northern Colorado scored one run in the bottom of the second to pull within six, 7-1. The Rams scored one more in the top of the fourth inning and two in the top of the fifth to take the 10-1 lead and the win.
Junior Genevieve Kelly pitched four innings for the Rams, giving up just one run on five hits, striking out two and walking one, while Strickland came on in the fifth inning and struck out the side.
Strickland hit three two-baggers in the double header, bringing her season total to 18, which is just one shy of tying the school single-season record of 19 held by Sarah Fredstrom (1997). The Rams tallied 13 hits in each of the two games and have now had at least 11 hits in five of the last six contests.
Colorado State will start Mountain West Conference play and have its season home-opener on Friday against San Diego State. The first game of the double header is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Rams then take on UNLV on Sunday with a double header starting at noon.
