Sacramento, Calif. - The Rams (19-9) posted a 4-0 record in the Capital Classic Softball Tournament as they triumphed in a close final game against Southern Utah on Sunday, defeating them by a final score of 1-0.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when junior Jessica Strickland reached on an error. Sophomore Lauren Cusick reached on a fielder's choice. Strickland scored the Rams' only run on a one-out single by freshman Renee Welty.
Freshman pitcher MaryBeth Culp started her second game for the Rams, pitching the first three innings. She allowed only one hit and struck out one batter. Strickland pushed her record to 7-7 on the season, picking up the win while pitching 4.0 innings in relief of Culp. She allowed three hits and struck out three batters.
Freshman Kim Klabough's three wins and one perfect game over the weekend earned her All-Tournament honors.
The Rams take a much needed break as they prepare for their first conference game this season against the New Mexico Lobos. The first game of the double header is slated to start at 1 p.m. MT in Albuquerque, N.M. on April 1.
