Rams Drop Two to SDSU

San Diego, Calif. - The Colorado State University softball team (22-12, 3-3 MWC) dropped both games of a conference double header with the SDSU Aztecs (19-8, 4-0 MWC) on Sunday. The Aztecs defeated the Rams by a final of 3-1 in game one, followed by a 4-1 loss in game two.

In game one, the Rams opened scoring in the top of the first inning, posting their only run of the game. Senior Tara Harbert started the offense for the Rams, reaching on an error by Aztec pitcher Christina Ross. Junior Jessica Strickland reached on a fielder's choice before sophomore Lauren Cusick singled to first base. Junior Stacey Leigh reached on a fielder's choice followed by a one-run single from sophomore Julia Kloppe to score Cusick, putting the Rams up 1-0.

The Rebels answered in the bottom of the first, posting two runs of their own to lead 2-1. Senior Meagan Hartung was hit by a pitch and sophomore Tamani Wells reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Erin Floros boosted the Aztecs with a home run to score Wells.

The Aztecs didn't score again until the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Chrissie Markham was hit by a pitch. She advanced to second base on a sac bunt by sophomore Allison Smith. Senior Bree Boyer singled to shortstop and Hartung walked. Markham scored the Aztecs final run on an error by catcher Stacey Leigh, giving SDSU a 3-1 advantage.

Freshman Kim Klabough (12-3) pitched the complete game for the Rams, allowing three hits while striking out no batters.

In the second game, the Rams got their only run in the top of the second inning on a homer by sophomore Julia Kloppe, the seventh of her career.

The Aztecs posted three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning starting with a single by sophomore Taryin Casillas. Casillas advanced to second before scoring on a double by Smith. Boyer was hit by a pitch before Klabough came in to relieve Strickland. Hartung singled to center field and Smith scored on an error by center fielder Katie Dean, putting the Aztecs up 2-1. Junior Christina Hollingshead pinch hit for Wells and reached on a fielder's choice to score Boyer.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, SDSU tallied their final run to beat the Rams 4-1. Hartung and Wells both led with singles before Hartung scored on a single by Floros.

Junior Jessica Strickland (9-9) started game two and picked up the loss allowing three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. Klabough pitched 2.2 innings in relief of Strickland, allowing one run and four hits.

The Rams will continue Mountain West Conference play on their home field with double headers against Utah on April 14 and BYU on April 15. The first game of the double headers are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. MT and 12 p.m. MT, respectively.
