The Colorado State softball team fell to UC Davis in the final round of action at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sunday afternoon. The Rams fell to the Aggies, 7-3.
The UC Davis Aggies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Rams' freshman pitcher Rebecca Penland. Penland pitched the first five innings for the Rams.
Colorado State got on the board in the fifth inning when senior Jessica Strickland hit a solo home run, and the Rams cut the Aggies' lead to just one run, 4-3 in the sixth inning, thanks to a trio of freshman bats. Sara Sullivan got things started with a single and advanced to third when the UC Davis third baseman threw a Roby Mask slow roller past the first baseman, allowing Mask to advance on the play. Ashley Munoz then drove in mask with a single to left field.
Sophomore Kim Klabough came on in relief of Penland, and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs before Penland reentered to end the game for the Rams.
With the loss, Colorado State is now 4-7 to open the season. The Rams look to return to their winning ways when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Razorback Invitational, beginning Friday, Feb. 23.
