Ram Softball Extends Streak

The Colorado State softball team picked up its third consecutive victory on Sunday morning to close out the Clarion Inn Lady `Back Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. with a 6-2 victory over Wichita State. With the win, the Rams move to 7-9 on the season.
"I'm very pleased with our performance. It is positive for us to be on this three-game winning streak," said head coach Mary Yori.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead against the Shockers in the top of the first inning when junior Lauren Cusick doubled to lead off the game and scored two batters later on an error by Wichita State's Elissa Zeches in right field who mishandled a Brittany Huerta hit.
Wichita State tied the game in the bottom half of the first, but the Rams regained the lead with a five-run third inning that included a two-run homer by senior Jessica Strickland and a three-run shot off the bat of sophomore Shannon Causgrove.
The Shockers added one more run in the bottom of the third, but that was all the offense that CSU pitcher Cayte Billman would allow. Billman evened her season record at 2-2 with the complete-game victory, her second complete-game win in two days. The junior transfer from Nebraska-Omaha allowed just five hits by the Shockers and struck out 10 batters while allowing just one walk.
"Cayte (Billman) pitched an outstanding game for us and it is great to see our pitchers get back on track," added Yori.
Next up, the Rams play their home opener when they play host to Utah State and Northern Colorado in the Colorado State Tournament March 3-4 at Ram Field.
