Softball Falls to Kansas, 5-1

The Colorado State softball team (20-14) fell to the University of Kansas (21-8-1) in the final game of the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. on Sunday afternoon. The Rams closed out the tournament with an overall record of 3-2, and finish their spring break road trip with a record of 10-4.
The Rams' offense was held to just six hits by Jayhawks pitcher Kassie Humphreys (11-3), who recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest.
Colorado State freshman Ashley Munoz provided the only offensive spark for the Rams, crushing her fifth home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning for the Rams. Munoz finished the day 2-for-2 from the plate with a walk and classmate Allison Majam also notched two hits, going 2-for-3 from the plate.
Kansas took control of the game with three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher Rebecca Penland (4-3) started the game for the Rams and picked up the loss. Penland allowed three runs - one earned - while walking one batter and giving up four hits in three innings of work. Senior Jessica Strickland pitched three innings in relief of Penland, allowing two runs and five hits, while fanning one batter.
Next up, the Rams head to nearby Greeley, Colo. for a doubleheader battle with in-state rival Northern Colorado on Saturday, March 24. Game one is slated to begin at noon at Butler-Hancock Softball Field. The Rams defeated the Bears twice this season in the Colorado State Spring Tournament, posting 9-0 (5) and 12-2 victories.
