The Colorado State softball team won the Colorado State Tournament in Ft. Collins Colo. The Rams were defeated by the Utah State Aggies this morning 3-2, but bounced back this afternoon to beat the Northern Colorado Bears 12-2.
In the first game, the Rams jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third with two home runs from junior Lauren Cusick and freshman Sarah Sullivan. They kept that lead until the top of the seventh when Jamie Fife of Utah State doubled down the right field line. Amy Schiable followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, Aubrie Stroman singled through the right side to score Fife. Ashley Bellum came up to the plate with two outs and launched a double to left field to score Schiable and Stroman to give the Aggies a 3-2 lead. The Rams fell short in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost 3-2.
Senior Jessica Strickland pitched 6.1 innings and gave up only four hits and had nine strikeouts. Sophomore Kim Klabough came in to relieve her in the seventh and gave up the hit that scored the winning run.
Against Northern Colorado, the Rams notched four runs in the top of the third to gain a steady lead on the Bears. With only one out, Senior Brittany Huerta tripled to right field. Strickland followed her and hit a double to left center to score Huerta. Freshman Allison Majam singled through the right side to score Strickland to make the score 2-0. With the bases loaded, freshman Kayla Kreutzman singled up the middle to score Majam and freshman Rebecca Penland. The Rams added two more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-0. In the top of the seventh, the Rams added six more runs to make the score 12-1. The Bears could not make a comeback and the final score was 12-2.
Penland started the game for the Rams and pitched all seven innings. She allowed two runs on four hits and struck out eight. This was the first collegiate win for Penland.
Colorado State travels to the Fresno State Bulldog Classic to face Toledo on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 5:30 p.m.
