Final Stats

The Colorado State softball team (26-23, 5-5 MWC) picked up two key victories on Friday evening, defeating the UNLV Rebels, 2-1 and 4-3, in Las Vegas, Nev. to stay in the hunt for an MWC title.

Game one was a defensive showdown for the first for the first five innings before Allison Majam homered to lead off the sixth inning and give the Rams a 1-0 lead. UNLV tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rams responded when Lauren Cusick knocked in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a fielder's choice that scored Sara Sullivan from third base.

The Rams held tough in the bottom of the seventh to capture the victory in game one. Majam led the Rams going 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Senior Brittany Huerta was 2-for-2 with a walk in the contest for the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Klabough picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just one run on four this and striking out four batters in seven innings of work.

In game two, all of the Rams runs were scored in the first three innings of the game. Julia Kloppe singled with two outs in the first inning to score Majam from third base and Cusick doubled in Huerta with two outs in the second inning to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.

The Rams added two more runs in the third inning. Ashley Munoz and Kloppe recorded back-to-back home runs to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage.

UNLV added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the Rams' early advantage.

Freshman pitcher Rebecca Penland went the distance for the Rams, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five batters in seven innings in the circle.

The Rams will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow afternoon, taking on the San Diego State Aztecs beginning at 4 p.m. MT tomorrow night. The Rams will then close out the weekend with one more contest against SDSU at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday afternoon.
