Rams Topped by Aztecs on Road

The Colorado State softball team was unable to overcome a four-run first inning by the San Diego State Aztecs, falling 10-4, Saturday night on the road.
San Diego State jumped out to an early advantage, tagging freshman starter Rebecca Penland for four runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning pitched, before senior Jessica Strickland entered the game in relief.
Aztec Catcher Lindsay Marquez blasted a one-out three-run home run in the game's opening frame. San Diego State added two runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings, and held off rallies by the Rams in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pick up the victory.
Colorado State got on the board in the third inning when Strickland drove in senior Brittany Huerta, who led off the inning by reaching on an error by SDSU's Melissa Owens. The Rams added two more runs in the fourth inning when freshman Ashley Munoz and sophomore Shannon Causgrove each scored on wild pitches by Owens, who entered the game in relief of starter, Christina Ross. Munoz drove in Strickland in the fifth inning to cap the scoring for the Rams.
Munoz led the Rams, going 2-for-3 from the plate with one run and one RBI. Strickland was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. She also pitched 5.1 innings in relief of Penland, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out two batters.
The Rams conclude this road trip and the season series with San Diego State tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.
