Volleyball hosts New Mexico in Saturday evening match

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State plays its second Mountain West Conference match it hosts New Mexico Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Lobos enter the contest on a four-match losing streak.
The Rams (6-3, 1-0) won their Mountain West season opener, a 3-0 sweep of TCU Wednesday night. Ashley Fornstrom proved why she was named preseason setter of the year with 46 assists and four blocks. Jaime Strauss hit .462 with 20 kills for the Rams. Joining Strauss in double-figure kills was Mekana Barnes with 13. Both players have had double-digit kills in every match this season. Katelin Batten led the Rams with 13 digs. Strauss had nine digs and Jacque Davisson finished with seven.
Four players hit .400 or better in the match (Strauss .462, Fornstrom .571, Barnes .435 and Tonya Mokelki .467) as the team hit .361. Mokelki had nine kills and freshman Danielle Minch finished with six while Tessa Nelson had five kills. Jonelle Wallace had one kill on the match. CSU's blocking continues to be a key the Rams wins. CSU out-blocked the Horned Frogs 11-5. Nelson finished with a team high six blocks.
Last weekend the Rams won the Hilton Classic with victories over in-state rival Colorado, Miami University and Winthrop. Mokelki and Fornstrom were named to the all-tournament team. The Rams currently have six players hitting .200 or better for the season.
The New Mexico match can be heard on KCSU 90.5 and is broadcast live through CSURams.com. Live stats coverage will be available for the match on the Web site. The Rams will take to the road for their first MWC road matches of the season against Utah Friday Sept. 21 and BYU on Saturday Sept. 22. Both teams were ranked in the AVCA preseason coaches' poll.
