LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Early in Thursday's match against UNLV, senior setter Ashley Fornstrom routinely tipped the ball to a CSU hitter for a kill to tie the score at eight. In that moment, she solidified her place as the best setter in Mountain West history.
Needing just three assists to pass Wyoming's Amy Doman (2001-04) as the all-time Mountain West Conference assist leader, Fornstorm easily broke the record in the first set against the Rebels.
Fornstrom went on to record 44 more assists in the match, and currently sits at 4,877 in her career. Previously the conference career assist record held at 4,832.
Taking this record is just another star on the setter's already sparkling resume. In addition to being named the conference setter of the year last season, Fornstrom was named to the AVCA All-West region team and was an honorable mention AVCA All-American.
She has been CSU's starting setter since her freshman year, and has won conference Player of the Week honors three times.
But perhaps her highest praise comes from her teammates, who credit her for much of the squad's success.
"She's always critiquing herself to make whatever situation we're in better. As a hitter, you always know she's going to help you out," said All-American Mekana Barnes, whom Fornstrom has been setting to for her entire career at Colorado State.
Even the younger players praise Fornstrom for her impact on the team.
"She has great leadership skills," said sophomore Emily Koenning. "She's really athletic, and one of the strongest people on our team."
Fornstrom is closing in on CSU's assist record as well, and needs 997 more assists this season to move over Analisa Saylor into second on Colorado State's all-time list.
