Fort Collins, Colo. - The Sportswomen of Colorado named Colorado State's Mekana Barnes as the recipient of the 2007 volleyball award at its 34th annual awards banquet on Sunday. The organization honors the state's premier female athletes and recognizes their achievements. "It's a great honor for Mekana to be given that award," said Rams Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "She is one of the state's top athletes and it is great for her to be given the recognition." In her 2007 volleyball season, Barnes was named to the preseason all-MWC team, MWC Player of the Week four times and MWC Player of the Year. Nationally, Sports Imports/AVCA recognized Barnes as a Division I Player of the Week. In the post season, the AVCA slotted Barnes on its all-region team and she became only the eighth player in CSU history to be named to the AVCA All-America squad, on the third team. Barnes is the third junior in CSU volleyball history to earn the honor. "I am pleased that Sportswomen of Colorado chose to honor Mekana Barnes," said Christine Susemihl, senior associate athletic director of internal operations. "She is an outstanding student-athlete, a leader in our program and an excellent representation of CSU." Ram volleyball will start spring practice today.
