CSU softball falls at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Colorado State softball team lost its fourth straight conference game Saturday, dropping a 15-4 (5) decision at New Mexico. The Rams are now 20-15 on the season and 1-4 in MWC play.
New Mexico scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.
Colorado State answered in the top of the third inning with two runs. With one out, senior Lauren Cusick singled on a bunt and advanced to second on a walk to freshman Caitlan Stem. An error loaded the bases for senior Julia Kloppe and she delivered a single through the left side to give the Rams their first run. Sophomore Ashley Munoz was hit by a pitch for the fifth time this season to plate Stem and tie the score at two.
The Lobos opened the game up in the bottom of the third, adding six runs to take an 8-2 lead.
Senior Cayte Billman hit a solo shot to right center in the top of the fourth to cut the Lobos' lead to five, but UNM answered in the bottom half of the inning with seven more runs on five hits to extend the lead to 15-3.
Munoz doubled to left field with one out in the fifth and scored on a double by sophomore Kayla Kreutzman, but New Mexico pitcher Kelly Ninemire got the final out of the game to give the Lobos the 15-4 victory.
Munoz finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
Sophomore Rebecca Penland started in the circle for the Rams and pitched 2.1 innings before being relieved by Billman. She threw 0.2 innings and was then relieved by freshman Eranne Daugharthy. Junior Kim Klabough finished the game for Colorado State, recording the last two outs for the Lobos.
The Rams and Lobos return to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. Colorado State will then head back to Fort Collins for a rescheduled match with in-state rival Northern Colorado on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ram Field. The Rams play their MWC home opener on Friday, a televised (The Mtn.) doubleheader with UNLV. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MT.
