FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State's senior third baseman Lauren Cusick and sophomore outfielder Allison Majam were selected to the all-West region softball team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). This marks the second time that Cusick has been tabbed by the NFCA, having earned second-team honors as a sophomore in 2006. Majam is a first-time honoree.
Chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
Cusick, who was recently selected as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, posted one of the most impressive seasons in school history. The senior led the team in batting average (.393), slugging percentage (.863), on-base percentage (.493), runs (61), hits (66), RBI (42), triples (2), home runs (20), total bases (145) and walks (30). She broke school single-season records for runs, home runs, slugging percentage and walks. Nationally, Cusick finished the season ranked in the Top 5 in four categories, including home runs per game (second, 0.39), runs per game (third, 1.2), total home runs (fourth, 20) and slugging percentage (eighth, 0.863). Cusick started 51 games at third base, posting a .970 fielding percentage.
Majam started 51 games in the outfield for CSU in 2008 en route to all-MWC honors for the second consecutive year. She started the season in right field before transitioning to center field for most of the Rams' conference schedule. Majam posted a .943 fielding percentage, hit .331, and tallied 34 runs, 12 doubles, eight home runs and 34 RBI. The sophomore posted a .544 slugging percentage and ranked 19th in the nation, recording four sacrifice flies on the season, to tie for the MWC lead in that category.
Colorado State finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 29-22, securing its sixth consecutive season with at least 25 wins and sixth consecutive season in which the team finished .500 or better.
