Rams drop final tournament game to Buckeyes

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Colorado State softball team (3-3) concluded the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic with an 11-2 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday. The Rams finished the tournament 3-2, defeating Missouri-Kansas City, Ohio and Cleveland State.
Freshman Christine Thomsen gave the Rams their only two runs in the third inning when she singled to plate sophomore Caitlan Stem from second and Jenna Krogh from first. Stem singled up the middle earlier in the inning and Krogh reached first on an error by the Buckeyes catcher.
Freshman Dani Chaplin received her second collegiate start in the circle for the Rams and threw 2.1 innings before being relieved by junior Rebecca Penland. Penland finished the game for the Rams, throwing three innings while striking out three Ohio State batters.
Colorado State heads to Riverside, Calif., on Friday, for the aTEN Construction Tournament. The Rams will face Tulsa on Friday at 10 a.m. MT, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday against San Diego and UC Riverside at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.MT, respectively. Colorado State will conclude the tournament on Sunday against Tulsa at 11 a.m. MT.
