This week’s notable storylines…
- The Mountain West’s most dynamic true freshmen face off: Southern California high-school products Ronnie Hillman (SDSU), the league’s leading rusher, and Pete Thomas (CSU), the nation’s only true freshman to start each of his team’s games at quarterback.
- CSU meets the fifth opponent in 10 games this season receiving votes in the national polls (also Nevada, TCU, Air Force and Utah).
- At Qualcomm Stadium against the Aztecs, CSU has won six of its last seven games (1995-2008). Counting the 1995 and ‘97 Holiday bowls, the Rams have returned from the venue victorious in seven of their last nine San Diego trips.
- Several members of the CSU coaching staff, including Head Coach Steve Fairchild, and an assortment of players return to their hometown, San Diego.
- The Rams face a daunting travel itinerary, with a night game on the West Coast followed by an early morning return to Fort Collins. The good news is that Daylight Savings ends Sunday morning at 2 a.m., while the Rams are in the air, giving them an extra hour of sleep.
- CSU must win to keep any hopes alive of a bowl berth in 2010. The Rams are 2-1 since Fairchild challenged them after their Oct. 9 loss at Air Force to leave no regrets in the second half of their season.
- The Rams play for the second and final time on grass, their fewest games on natural surfaces in program history.
