FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The CSU Rams dropped only their second home game of the year Saturday at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium, falling to the BYU Cougars, 49-10.
The game marked the last time CSU (3-8, 2-5 Mountain West) and BYU (5-5, 4-2) will see each other in the foreseeable future, since BYU in August chose to become independent beginning in 2011. The loss brings the Rams' overall home record to 4-2 in 2010.
Senior Ricky Brewer paced the defense with 13 tackles, bringing his season total to 101. He is the first CSU player since Eric Pauly (2002-2003) with multiple 100-tackle seasons. Since three players reached 100 in 2003, only Brewer (103 in 2008) and Mychal Sisson (105 in '08) have reached the landmark in a season.
Sisson chipped in with 12 tackles, including two forced fumbles. Sisson now has five forced fumbles on the season, the most by a CSU player since 1998, when Joey Porter had eight, Clark Haggans had seven and Willie Taylor had six.
Sisson forced his first fumble n the game's opening drive, and it was recovered by Elijah-Blu Smith.
"I got it and looked up and somebody hit me," said Smith. "I thought it was some good momentum to get us going."
But the BYU offense regained that momentum by scoring its opening touchdown on a flea-flicker from Jake Heaps to Luke Ashworth. Ashworth finished the day with 113 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
The Rams got all their points in the fourth quarter. Ben DeLine kicked a 34-yard field goal, and four minutes later, Pete Thomas connected with Raymond Carter on a beautiful, 22-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone. Thomas finished the day 28-of-42 for 292 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions.
The Rams offense fumbled the ball three times Saturday, losing two of them in the first 16 minutes. That matched the amount of fumbles lost in the Rams' previous five games.
The game also marked the last home contest for 16 seniors.
"I love those guys," said Head Coach Steve Fairchild. "I do want to say it's a great senior class and I really do appreciate the senior leadership they provide."
The Rams will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to Laramie, Wyo., to battle Wyoming for the legendary Bronze Boot. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
