Penland earns MWC Player of Week honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State senior Rebecca Penland was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the second time the senior has been honored (also May 6, 2008).
Penland, a Riverside, Calif., native, batted .500 (6-for-12) from the plate, with one home run, one double, five RBI and three runs scored, and helped the Rams finish the Sleep Inn Classic 3-1.
In a 4-3 win on Friday against Sam Houston State, Penland went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double and one stolen base. She followed with a 2-for-3 performance in CSU’s 3-2 win over Missouri State on Friday, hitting a solo home run and scoring two runs of her own in the process.
In Colorado State’s 8-1 loss to Drake on Saturday, Penland went 1-for-3 with one RBI. In the Rams’ final game of the tournament, she finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored in an 8-7 win over North Texas.
Penland has recorded a hit in all nine of Colorado State’s games this season, batting .538 from the plate with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBI.
Penland takes her nine-game hitting streak on the road this weekend at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Rams face Pacific at 2 p.m. MT on Friday, followed by a 7 p.m. MT first pitch against No. 7/4 UCLA.
