PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Colorado State used a five-run ninth to defeat Cal State Fullerton in extra innings on Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic.
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks recorded the complete-game victory for the Rams (6-6), her second in as many days.
Head Coach Mary Yori was proud of the sophomore’s maturity and poise throughout the game.
“Kelli had a maturity moment today,” she said. “She hung in there and fought hard for the victory. She played like a veteran.”
Colorado State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after senior Ashley Munoz led off the inning with a double and scored when fellow senior Robyn Mask singled.
The Rams added to their lead in the third inning when sophomore Christine Thomsen hit a sacrifice fly to plate junior Caitlan Stem, who drew a walk to lead off the inning.
Munoz led off the following inning with a solo shot to give the Rams a 3-0 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton (3-11) answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to cut Colorado State’s lead to 3-2.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning, but the Titans answered in the sixth inning with a run and tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh frame to send the game into extra innings.
Each team recorded a run in the eighth inning, but Colorado State’s offense put five runs together in the top of the ninth to grab a 10-5 lead.
Eubanks shut out Cal State Fullerton’s offense in the bottom half of the inning to pick up her fifth victory of the season.
Colorado State concludes the tournament Sunday against Long Beach State at 10 a.m. MT, followed by a 12 p.m. MT first pitch against No. 13/14 California.
