SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Senior catcher Ashley Munoz connected on her fourth home run of the season, but it was not enough as Colorado State dropped a 6-1 decision at MWC foe San Diego State on Sunday afternoon.
Munoz tallied the Rams’ lone run of the game when she crushed the first pitch over the left field wall to bring CSU to within one run, 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning, but the Aztecs put the game out of reach with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame.
A solo shot by SDSU’s junior shortstop, Jen Wisneski, pushed the lead to 6-1 in the sixth, and the Rams’ bats were stymied by SDSU pitcher Samantha Beasley, who tallied 12 strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory.
The loss dropped the Rams to 22-14 overall, but it marked CSU’s third straight loss to begin the MWC slate. The Aztecs improved to 25-10 (3-0 MWC).
Rams sophomore ace Kelli Eubanks squared off with Beasley in a matchup of all-MWC pitching performers. Eubanks (16-9), allowed six runs on nine hits, while striking out two batters in five innings of work. Freshman Kelsey Jo O’Brien pitched the final three outs of the game for the Rams. Beasley improved to 20-6, allowing one run on four hits.
Sophomore first baseman Christine Thomsen added a pair of hits for the Rams, while senior outfielder Sarah Sullivan notched the Rams’ first hit of the game, a single to the shortstop in the third inning.
The Rams return to the field Thursday, hosting the Utah Utes in their first home MWC game of the season. First pitch against the Utes is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT at Ram Field. The Rams will then host games against BYU on Friday and Saturday, with games slated to begin at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
