Softball recap: Thomsen leads Rams past Cougars

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State sophomore Christine Thomsen knocked an RBI single to right field to give the Rams a 4-3 advantage Saturday en route to a 7-3 victory over BYU at Ram Field.
“This was a well-played victory against the conference leader,” Head Coach Mary Yori said. “Taking two of three games this weekend gives us a better chance to compete in conference.”
The Cougars (29-9, 4-1 MWC) grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Andrea Ramirez singled to center field to plate teammates J.C. Clayton and Kristin Delahoussaye.
Colorado State (24-15, 2-4 MWC) cut BYU’s lead in half in the bottom of the frame after junior Caitlan Stem led off the inning with a single to center field and scored Thomsen reached on an error by Cougar pitcher Paige Affleck.
BYU added a run to its lead in the top of the third, but Colorado State answered in the bottom half of the inning after senior Ashley Munoz singled to right field to plate Thomsen.
Stem tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth after a 1 hour 20 minute rain delay. Stem singled to right center to plate junior Ivory Allen from first after an error by BYU’s right fielder Delaney Willard.
Allen scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth after Thomsen singled to right field.
Senior Rebecca Penland extended the Rams’ lead after she belted a three-run shot to dead center field to give Colorado State a 7-3 advantage heading into the final frame.
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks allowed a hit and a walk in the top of the seventh, but recorded the final three outs for the Rams to secure her 18th victory of the season.
Colorado State takes a break from conference action to conclude its series with Northern Colorado on Tuesday at Ram Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. MT. The Rams will then travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for two games against the Lobos on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch both days is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
