Softball recap: Rams fall to Rebels, 9-4

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but UNLV responded with nine unanswered to defeat the Rams, 9-4, at Ram Field on Friday.
Junior Caitlan Stem pushed her hitting streak to 12 games when she led off the bottom of the first with a double to left center. Stem recorded the Rams’ first run after sophomore Christine Thomsen doubled to deep center and Thomsen scored when senior Allison Majam homered to center field to give Colorado State a 3-0 advantage. The two-run shot marked Majam’s sixth of the season.
The game remained 3-0 until the top of the fourth when Marissa Nichols homered to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
The Rebels (32-20, 9-5 MWC) took a 4-3 lead in the following frame when Nichols singled to center field and tallied her fourth RBI of the game and Laura Briones gave UNLV its fifth run of the game on her single to center.
The Rebels used a four-run seventh to grab a 9-3 advantage, recording two doubles and two singles.
Senior Ashley Munoz belted her first home run at Ram Field this season, and her sixth overall, in the bottom of the seventh, but UNLV pitcher Jessica O’Connor recorded two groundouts to secure the Rebels’ 9-4 victory.
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks made her 31st start this season in the circle, tossing 6.2 innings before freshman Kelsey Jo O’Brien entered the game and recorded the final out for the Rams.
Colorado State (29-19, 7-7 MWC) and UNLV conclude the season series Saturday at Ram Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MT.
Saturday is senior day at Ram Field, where six seniors – Kayla Kreutzman, Allison Majam, Robyn Mask, Ashley Munoz, Rebecca Penland and Sarah Sullivan – will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
