STARKVILLE, Miss. - Colorado State junior shortstop Caitlan Stem and sophomore first baseman Christine Thomsen were recognized Thursday by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) as members of the NFCA/Louisville Slugger all-Pacific region second team.
This marks the second time in as many years both players have been selected, and is the sixth time in the last seven seasons that multiple Rams received the honor.
Stem, a junior from Broomfield, Colo., earned her second consecutive all-region honor after establishing new MWC records for batting average (.553) and slugging percentage (1.106) in league play. She also notched a .607 on-base percentage against MWC opponents to rank second all-time in the league record books. Stem, one of five Rams to start all 49 games, led CSU in almost every offensive category and ranked in the top 10 in several MWC categories, including batting average (third, .400), hits (fourth, 66), total bases (fourth, 108), home runs (tied for fourth, 11), slugging percentage (fifth, .655) and runs scored (fifth, 44). Defensively, Stem posted an .896 fielding percentage with 69 putouts and 95 assists from her shortstop position.
Thomsen ranked second on the team with a .386 overall batting average, 56 total hits, seven homers and 38 runs. Thomsen also ranked second on the squad with a .614 slugging percentage and 43 RBI, and led the team with a .474 on-base percentage. Defensively, Thomsen posted a .993 fielding percentage with 277 putouts and 15 assists in her 49 starts at first base.
Chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams, which will be announced June 2.
Stem and Thomsen each were one of two players selected to the second team at their respective positions on the 24-player Pacific-region squad.
Colorado State finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 29-20, securing the team’s eighth consecutive season with at least 25 wins and a .500-or-better record.
