FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A voting panel comprised of the six Mountain West Conference head coaches selected defending champion BYU to win the MWC regular-season title, the conference announced Thursday.
The Cougars received 24 total points from the panel and four first-place votes, while San Diego State was close behind with 22 points and two first-place votes. UNLV was picked third with 15 points and Colorado State fourth with 13 points. Utah and New Mexico rounded out the fifth and sixth spots in the preseason rankings with 11 and five points, respectively.
Colorado State was picked to finish fifth in the 2010 poll, but finished fourth with a 7-8 conference record.
Colorado State's 2011 season will be the first under Head Coach Jen Fisher, a Fort Collins native and CSU graduate. The squad will feature two 2010 all-conference players, senior shortstop Caitlan Stem and junior pitcher Kelli Eubanks. Seven letterwinners will also return for the 2011 season.
The Rams begin their 2011 campaign against New Mexico State on Feb. 11 at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. They will begin their home schedule on March 4, taking on Northern Illinois University in the Colorado State Classic at Ram Field.
