Utah State 33, Colorado State 18
Maverik Stadium--Logan, Utah
Colorado State Head Coach Mike Bobo:
"It's evident that when we're on the road and make mistakes like we did, we're not going to have a chance to win the game. I thought we came out with more effort and energy in the second half. It was a great job by the defense to hold them to field goals, but then the penalties and turnovers really put us behind the eight ball.
Colorado State QB Nick Stevens
(on withstanding the pressure he was under)
"I think the o-line did a great job containing their defense. They had a great a d-line and linebackers. I know No. 9 (Kyler Fackrell) was in there a lot, he's a great player, but despite them being so good I think our o-line really held their own. There were a couple times I had to scramble because the coverage was tight but I think the o-line did really well."
(on sustaining drives)
"We ended up moving the ball really well at the end of the game, and if we were able to do that at the beginning of the game, things might be different. I think we just need to come out and focus on being able to play 60 minutes, a complete game, to the best of our abilities."
(on whether the team's confidence is shaken)
"I don't think so. I think that it's a new season and I think about what we did last year. We're 0-1 in conference but half the teams will be 0-1 in the conference after this week. I think we've just got to focus on the rest of the season and not lose hope and I think we'll be alright."
(on what it will take to fix some of the issues)
"I think part of that is going into playing that complete game for 60 minutes. It's not really details all the time, it's, one person here and there and that's what kills our drives and defense and stuff like that so I think that for the most part we do a really good job taking care of those. It's just we'll take a play off and that's what kind of springs it. A long run or we do something on offense we aren't supposed to."
(on the offense's two fumbles)
"I mean, it was awful but at the same time, to take a good thing, the defense stopped them to a field goal when they were inside the 20 on my fumble. So that's good that the defense came out and stopped them but those really hurt us. Those could have been two scoring drives that put us ahead."
Colorado State CB DeAndre Elliott
(on the penalties on the defense)
"The penalties, they hurt us a lot. Definitely on third down when the offense is getting off the field. We've just got to stay disciplined, pay attention to details and get ready for next week."
(on how difficult it is to not get the stops because of penalties)
"Anytime we don't get the stop or anytime we get the penalties, it always hurts. It's just going to hurt regardless but I mean we've just got to go on to the next play, we can't look in the past."
(on whether it is an undisciplined team despite the veteran leadership on defense)
"I wouldn't say that. I would say that we've just got to go back and look at the game film and see what we did wrong and it's not that we are not disciplined, we've just got to pay attention to detail. The details are what hurt us."
(on looking at game tape from previous games and finding consistent problems)
"I wouldn't say anything is not consistent, we've just got to have more attention to details. I can't say that too many times. As long as we get the details down, we'll be great."
(on being a 2-3 team after being a 10-win team last year)
"It hurts, but we can't live in the past. Last year is last year, this year is this year."
Colorado State RB Dalyn Dawkins
(on the offense not sustaining drives)
"It's real frustrating, you know, not being able to punch it in the end zone after a long drive. We've just got to keep pushing."
(on the lack of discipline)
"We've got to keep focused, paying attention to the small details. We've got to keep focusing on all that stuff."
(on the shaken confidence of the team)
"I mean, it's a heartbreaker, but I honestly don't think we are going to get too down because of it. We're just going to turn around our focus now and focus on the next game."
Utah State Head Coach Matt Wells:
"Tremendous job by our young men. Hats off to our assistant coaches and our young men, I thought they came out ready to play. It was a tight-knit ballgame early on, but I loved the way we responded coming out of the lightning delay. There were some great individual performances. We're starting to come together as a team. We're still learning who we are and still trying to figure out our identities on both sides of the ball. I would be remiss if I didn't give a lot of respect to Mike Bobo. That's a good Colorado State team that we just beat. Those guys are going to win some games, I have no doubt about that. We wanted to be 1-0 at the end of the week, and we are. That's round one, here we go on the next one."
On Kent Myers' performance:
"I thought he played pretty well. There's room for improvement, he would tell you that. But to go out and set a school record in rushing yards by a quarterback, we're all really happy for him. The guys who were tied for the record before were here tonight watching him. That's what it's all about, you play for the guys who came before you. Kent will be the first to tell you that it was his recievers down the field, it was his O-Line. Coach Heupel did a nice job calling some stuff to get the ball in his hands."
On the ability to make adjustments:
"That's a reflection of our assistant coaches. I think they do a really good job. Having a by week probably helped us a little bit. We were able to self-reflect and see what our strengths are and how we can build on them. You have to start mixing it in schematically against your opponent. Hats off to our assistant coaches for the job they've done."
Utah State Sophomore Quarterback Kent Myers:
"I think the offense played very well. There were just some mental things with us. There were a few penalties that cost us a lot of yards. But overall I thought we played well, putting 33 points on the board. I'm just excited to see what else we can do, this being my first game of the year. Once we have a complete game, where everything is good, I'm excited to see what's next."
On moving forward through the season:
"Like Coach said, we haven't hit our peak yet. We're still not there. If we have six gears, I think we're only at three. With this being my first start of the year, we're still learning together. As we start watching film and looking at our next opponent, I'm excited to see what we can do. Tonight there were times I was trying to rush it and do too much.
Utah State Senior Linebacker Kyler Fackrell:
"Overall the defense did play well. We made plays. There were plays that we left on the field, but when it came down to it, we played well when we had to. Putting pressure on their offense was huge. Toward the end, we were able to do more of a four-man rush, leaving the other guys to drop into coverage."
On the return of the team's "swagger:"
"We came off the bye week rejuvenated and with a new sense of purpose. Ultimately, 1-2 wasn't what we wanted. All the goals that we had set before the season were still ahead of us, to get to the Mountain West Championship and to win a bowl game. Tonight was a huge test and I think the focus and energy were high."
