Softball recap: Rams beat Broncos in extra innings

Final Stats

BOISE, Idaho -- The Colorado State softball team battled against Boise State on Saturday to earn an 8-5 win in extra innings. The two teams fought back and forth throughout the game, with each team holding leads before CSU (24-25, 5-12 MW) tied the game in the seventh inning and scored four runs in the ninth to tame the Broncos (11-36, 3-14 MW).

The ninth-inning offensive burst started when Haley David -- who reached on a fielder's choice -- scored on a double by Shae Rodriguez. Freshman Savannah Clark followed with a run-scoring single, her fourth RBI of the game, before Jaelyn Manzanares brought in two more runs with a home run. It was the junior's second home run in as many games.

"It was obvious that one run might not be enough because of what we went through yesterday," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "Savannah getting on and getting an RBI to take the two-run lead was great, and then having Jaelyn hit her home run was really big for us."

Boise State tacked on one run in the bottom half of the inning after Lindsey Nicholson homered to center field, but that would be the only run the Broncos would be able to produce, as Logan Losh closed the inning with a lineout to earn the victory.

"Logan is mentally tough, and after the game she made sure to let her teammates know that it was the catcher and the first and third basemen that she could hear," Fisher said. "They kept her mentally in the game and mentally focused even when she had a tough count or tough batters, and even after she gave up a home run. I believe that gave her the lift that she needed to have the mental toughness."

In the beginning of the game, the Rams got on the board quickly for an early lead when Haley Hutton scored from third on a groundout to second base by Clark. Neither team would score over the next three innings, with CSU's base runners coming via two hits and two walks. Boise State was limited to one hit over the three innings with concentrated pitching by freshman Trinity Harrington.

In the fifth, CSU broke the line of goose eggs by scoring two when Hutton reached on a single and scored when Rodriguez doubled to right field. Rodriguez then scored right after, using speed to her advantage when Clark singled to the shortstop.

Boise State had an offensive burst, as well, in the bottom half of the inning. The Broncos tied the game at 3-3, scoring the first two on a steal of home followed by a throwing error, and the second from a solo shot by Kayla Clausen.

In the sixth inning, the Broncos took their first lead on a home run by Devon Bridges. Down by one run, the Rams wouldn't give in, scoring one run in the top of the seventh when David scored on a sacrifice fly by Clark.

CSU out-hit Boise State, 14-6, with Rodriguez going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Clark's four-RBI game. Haley Hutton, David, Clark and Taylor Hutton each had two hits. Harrington tossed the first 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Losh pitched the final 4.1 innings, also striking out four.

CSU returns to the field tomorrow for their finale against Boise State at 11 a.m. MT. The game can be streamed for free through the Mountain West Network.
