The Colorado State volleyball team has one of the largest and most-engaged fan bases in the NCAA, as evidenced by its record-breaking attendance figures. But what would happen if some of those fans got out of the stands and took part in the on-court action?

That became a reality for about 20 fans this spring, as premier members of Head Coach Tom Hilbert’s NETwork group were invited to participate in the program’s inaugural Volleyball 101 event.

The result was entertaining, to say the least. Both males and females participated, and the ages ranged from mid-40s to 84. For many, there was no prior volleyball experience, aside from years of cheering on the Rams.

They quickly learned, though, that no matter how many matches you’ve watched, it doesn’t necessarily translate to skills on the court.

“It was the first time we’ve done it, and it was hard for us to figure out how far we could go,” Hilbert said. “I think our fans had fun, and it gave them an appreciation for how hard the game is to play. It was also a way for us to connect with them and cultivate some of our closest supporters. It was a lot of fun.”

At the start of the night, Hilbert addressed the group and handed out a packet of introductory terms, techniques and even a section for the participants to take notes. After going over the basics of the game, and having several student-athletes demonstrate drills and form, it was time to put it all into play.

The NETwork members were divided into four stations, and were then tasked with trying the sport for themselves. They learned the basics of serving, setting, digging and attacking.

“Denny and I really enjoyed Volleyball 101," participant Jan Lynch said. "We liked the different skill stations that were set up. It is obvious how much practice and training that goes into playing the game, and as a spectator, the ladies have to be amazing athletes. It was great to see the  players change roles and become coaches of the skills. We would encourage other boosters to check into how they can be a part of such a fun event."

Hilbert and the team plan to host the event again next spring and make it an annual tradition. For more information on Hilbert’s NETwork group, click here.
