2014 MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONS
For the sixth year in a row, the Colorado State volleyball team is Mountain West champions. The Rams won their first 11 conference matches and led the league wire to wire en route to the conference title. In the conference’s 16-year history, CSU has won 12 of the regular-season titles, but never before had they won six in a row. CSU is also the only team in the nation to have won its conference title each of the past six years.
MOUNTAIN WEST DOMINATION
CSU has won 44 of its last 46 Mountain West matches, and overall, the Rams have won more than 86 percent of their MW contests all-time (216-33, .867 winning percentage), far greater than any current or former opponent. With the team’s win at Fresno State on Oct. 6, 2014, the Rams now own a winning record against each MW opponent.
RAMS No. 20 IN AVCA DIVISION I COACHES POLL
The Rams checked in at No. 20 in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Poll, and have now been ranked in 35 consecutive polls, the third-longest streak in program history. The Rams began the 2015 campaign ranked No. 12. CSU has been ranked in 270 total polls, a figure which ranks 14th in the NCAA. CSU has been ranked in the top 10 for a total of 76 weeks in its history, which ranks 18th among all schools. CSU spent 12 weeks ranked in the top 10 last season, reaching No. 6 on Oct. 13 - the Rams’ highest national ranking since 2004.
REID NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (SEPT. 28)
CSU senior Alex Reid was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28. Reid, who is playing her first season at CSU after transferring from Long Beach State, averaged 4.38 kills per set over the team’s two wins this past week, and posted a career-high 21 kills in the Rams’ five-set win over Boise State on Saturday. She registered 14 kills in CSU’s sweep of Utah State on Thursday, posting her second-best hitting percentage of the season at .542 with only one attack error. In addition, Reid had nine digs in each match and totaled four blocks for the week. In total, Reid only had four attack errors in 87 attempts across the two matches.
ADRIANNA “LeBron” CULBERT
Adrianna Culbert has played at a very high level to begin the 2015 season, and has tallied three triple-doubles in the process, earning her the nickname “LeBron” after the otherworldly NBA player. Most recently, Culbert had 13 kills, 30 assists and 10 digs in CSU’s 3-2 win over Boise State on Sept. 26. She also recorded 15 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs in a five-set loss at Texas A&M on Sept. 15. She posted 10 kills, 13 assists and 11 digs against Northern Colorado on Sept. 8, her second triple-double of the year. Culbert also recorded 10 kills, 20 assists and 12 digs against UC Davis on Aug. 29, giving CSU its first triple-double since Ashley Fornstrom accomplished the feat versus Utah on Oct. 20, 2007. Culbert became the 10th different CSU player to record a triple-double. What’s more, Culbert now has a pair of three-set triple-doubles, becoming the first CSU player to have multiple three-set triple-doubles. There have only been three total three-set triple-doubles in school history, with Culbert owning two of them.
ANDREWS LEADING UP THE MIDDLE
Acacia Andrews leads the Mountain West in hitting percentage at .414. She also entered CSU’s match at Texas A&M ranked fourth nationally in the statistic, recording only five attack errors over her first eight matches. She currently ranks 27th. A national ranking of 27th in hitting percentage would rank as the third-best in CSU history. Andrews has hit at least. 400 in nine matches this season, including a season-best .707 (12-0-17) against Western Michigan on Sept. 5.
COLAIZZI CAN DIG IT
Jaime Colaizzi, who was named to the All-Mountain West Preseason team as its libero, has been one of the most productive defensive players in the history of the CSU volleyball program. Colaizzi is second in CSU history with 1,273 total digs, and ranks second in digs per set with 3.59 over her career. Colaizzi has led the Rams in digs each of the past two seasons, and could become the third Ram to lead the team in both digs and digs per set for three straight seasons (Katelin Batten, 2006-09 and Jill Johnson, 1988-90).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE STREAK
Adrianna Culbert rattled off five-straight double-doubles between Aug 29-Sept. 8, tying the third-longest streak in CSU history. Her streak was the longest in program history since 2006, when Katherine Whitney had a seven-match double-double streak. In total, Culbert has posted eight double-doubles this season and 24 in her career.
HOME COOKING
Since the start of the 2011 season, CSU has been nearly unbeatable on its home court, going 64-6. Only four teams have better winning percentages at home since the 2011 season.
Including 2014 (10-1), CSU has gone 20-straight seasons with at least 10 home wins. The Rams went 16-1 at home in 2013, marking the 12th time they have lost one or fewer home matches in a season.
MOBY MADNESS
A large part of CSU’s home-court dominance is the large crowds the Rams draw. CSU averaged 3,231 fans per match in 2014, sixth-best in the NCAA. The Rams attracted five crowds larger than 4,000 last season, the second time they’ve accomplished that feat (1987).
CSU has been ranked in the top 25 for average annual attendance each season since the NCAA began calculating attendance figures in 1986, including the top-10 eight times and No. 1 in 1988.
MOUNTAIN WEST DOMINATION AT MOBY
The Rams have dominated the Mountain West since its inception in 1999, going 206-32. Prior to CSU’s loss to San Diego State on Nov. 27, 2013, the Rams had won 25-straight conference home matches, a streak that began during the final regular-season match of the 2010 season. One of the most impressive stats, however, was CSU’s 50-match home winning streak against current members of the MW, which dated back to Nov. 4, 2005.
CULBERT NAMED CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Colorado State’s Adrianna Culbert has been selected among 30 NCAA Division I senior women’s volleyball student-athletes named to the 2015 Senior CLASS Award candidate pool. The award honors student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Culbert, an outside hitter and setter for the Rams, was named a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete in 2012 and 2013, and was also named to the Academic All-Mountain West team in each of those years. The 2015 CSU captain also serves on the executive board of CSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a founding member of “Rambition”, which is a movement at CSU to get more people involved with the school and the local community.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December.
