COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Colorado State softball team wrapped up their competitive weekend at the Aggie Classic against UCLA on Sunday. CSU fell to UCLA despite a rally in the sixth, going 0-5 in the tournament.
The Bruins started their offensive drive fast and early in the first with a two-run homer against Bridgette Hutton who made her second appearance of the weekend. However in the second, she was relieved by veteran pitcher Holly Reinke after giving up another two-run homer to expand UCLA's lead to 4-0. Reinke was able to quiet the Bruins, but the silent bats sung once more in the fourth when UCLA scored off a two-run single, increasing their lead to 6-0.
CSU attempted a rally in the sixth, scoring three runs to cut the Bruins' lead by half. The offensive spark began when Kristina Akiona doubled to right to score Monica Navarrete who pinch ran for Savannah Clark after a walk. Shortly after, the Rams loaded the bases starting with Amber Nelson, who doubled to score Akiona.
With two outs, Taryn Arcarese, and Haley Hutton joined her on board with a singles each. A walk by Madison Kilcrease brought in Nelson, knocking out the Bruins' starting pitcher, Johanna Grauer. Their relief pitcher, Selina Ta'amilo, went to work quickly, shutting down the rally with a fly out.
UCLA sealed their win in the seventh, adding two runs off a single and a hit by a pitch. The Green and Gold were unable to rally once more despite a single by Clark, falling 8-3.

IN THEIR WORDS...
Head Coach Jen Fisher "They played excellence defense for themselves and really made some great plays. They're doing a great job so that was one thing we took away. I think our infield is starting to gel, they're starting to know each other well and play together."
"I think we looked good, but we're still trying to find our best offensive line up coupled with our best defensive lineup. We have quite a bit of depth right now so we're trying to figure out what we're going to look like at the plate. We're going to make some adjustments this week in practice and be more assertive offensively."
NEXT…
The Rams travel to Las Vegas, Nev. over the weekend of Feb. 19-21 for the UNLV Tournament. CSU will face four familiar teams, Portland State, Southern Utah, BYU, and Cal State Northridge, along with a new face, Grand Canyon University.
