Season Stats
LAS VEGAS – The Colorado State Rams softball team closed its five-game weekend with a loss to Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at the DeMarini Desert Classic.
After each team scored one run in the first inning, the game remain knotted at that score until the top of the sixth. The Antelopes reached base on an error and then doubled with no outs. A second consecutive double would produce two runs for the Antelopes, giving them a 3-1 lead.
The Rams had a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run at the plate, but could not get anyone home.
GCU got on the board in the opening half of the first inning, but CSU answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. The Rams got the bases loaded with three singles in a row to begin the bottom of the first, with junior Haley Hutton, sophomore Madison Kilcrease and junior Taryn Arcarese reaching base. Sophomore clean-up hitter Savannah Clark singled to send Hutton home, but Kilcrease was thrown out at the plate for the first out. The Rams then hit into a double play to end the early scoring threat.
No runs were scored by either team after the first inning until GCU’s game-winning runs in the top of the sixth. Only two hits were recorded during that period.
IN THEIR WORDS…
“We couldn’t quite get the bats going; I’m a little disappointed in that. We would’ve liked to show a little more based on our results from yesterday, but we weren’t focused enough at the plate and hit into their defense a little too much.” – CSU Head Coach Jen Fisher on her team’s lack of run production
“It was a good weekend for us and hopefully we can build on this. We’re still a young team and we’re still sometimes waiting for the game to come to us too often.” – Fisher on what her team can take from the weekend
Holly pitched a really good game, and this is a really good Grand Canyon team. To hold them to three runs and only allow the hits she did, she did a really good job.” – Fisher on Holly Reinke’s performance
NOTES…
- Holly Reinke made her seventh pitching appearance of the season on Sunday. Reinke boasts an ERA of 2.95 and opposing teams are only hitting .197 against her.
- Haley Hutton scored CSU’s lone run of the game, and is now tied with Jaelyn Manzanares for the team lead with six runs scored on the year.
- Hutton is hitting .469 on the season and holds a team-leading .564 on-base percentage. Hutton is currently CSU’s all-time leader in batting average, with nearly a .400 clip for her career.
- CSU went 3-2 for the weekend, including wins over the defending WCC champion (BYU) and Big West champion (Cal State Northridge) yesterday.
NEXT…
The Rams will head to Palm Springs, California for the Mary Nutter Memorial. CSU will play five games in three days, facing Long Beach State, Missouri, California, LIU Brooklyn and Loyola Marymount.
