PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Colorado State Rams dropped a pair of matches to top teams on the first day of the Mary Nutter Invitational on Friday.
Long Beach State - 7
Colorado State - 1
The Rams got off to a tough start on Friday afternoon against the 49ers, falling 7-1.
Freshman Lauren Buchanan homered in the bottom of the third inning to get the Rams on the board. The freshman smacked the ball over the center field wall for her second of the season.
Long Beach State scored two runs in both the first and second innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The 49ers would then build on their lead, scoring one run in innings 3-5 to take a 7-1 advantage through five innings.
Savannah Clark led off the bottom of the fifth with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the fifth, but Long Beach State struck out the next three CSU batters to prevent Clark from threatening to score.
Holly Reinke started the game in the circle for the Rams, but was removed after three innings. Freshman Bridgette Hutton would go on to pitch the last four, and both allowed two earned runs in the game.
Colorado State - 1
#17/12 Missouri - 9
The Rams and their late evening opponent, the 17th-ranked Missouri Tigers, were delayed significantly and did not get started until around 10 p.m. MT.
Missouri took the lead in the bottom of the second inning off a two-run home run to left field. The Tiges tripled their lead with four runs in the third inning, including another two-run homer. Larisa Petakoff came in for relief of Holly Reinke, who was making her second start of the day.
CSU scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Hannah McCorkhill doubled with one out, and Kirsten Kauk came in as a pinch runner. Kauk then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Haley Hutton recorded a sacrifice fly to score McCorkhill.
NOTES…
- Holly Reinke started both games in the circle for the Rams, her sixth and seventh of the season.
- Freshman Lauren Buchanan hit her second home run of the year (and of her collegiate career) against Long Beach State. Buchanan became the first CSU player with multiple homers so far this season.
- Including this weekend, the Rams will have played against five teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in a major poll at the time. That total is the third-most in the Mountain West.
NEXT…
CSU will play No. 25 California tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT. The Rams will then play two games on Sunday, taking on LIU-Brooklyn at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT, followed by Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m. MT/11:30 a.m. PT, to close out the Mary Nutter Invitational.
