Recap: Rams falter on 1st day of road trip

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team was blanked by Cal State Northridge, 7-0, on Saturday morning in Las Vegas. The match was the first of two contests in Las Vegas, with CSU facing undefeated UNLV Sunday morning.
CSU dropped the doubles point when it was unable to clinch a victory in either the No. 1 or No. 2 positions. CSU’s No. 1 tandem of Aina Hernandez Soler/Madison Porter was defeated, 6-0, and Emily Kolbow/Celine Voss was unable to hold off the Matadors, falling 6-1.
In singles action, CSU was unable to gain momentum against the Matadors, who won all six singles matches. Hernandez Soler forced a third set in her contest, at the No. 6 singles spot, but fell in the tiebreaker after winning the second set (7-5, 4-6, 10-3). Fellow senior Maddie Buxton lost in straight sets in her singles matchup but forced her opponent into extra games in both sets (6-4, 6-2).
“They (Buxton and Hernandez Soler) were close to winning, but they were just not consistent enough,” head coach Jon Messick said. “We are going to focus tomorrow on being better on the things that we are practicing. Tomorrow we are going to hopefully make some changes and play better. We are excited to play our first conference matchup, and hopefully we will close sets.”
The Rams’ conference opener will not be an easy task, facing No. 75 UNLV, a team that swept Cal State Northridge on Friday evening. The contest begins at 11 a.m. MT.
