FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State jumped on Boise State early on, but the Broncos rallied to beat the Rams, 7-6, in CSU’s Mountain West opener at Ram Field on Friday afternoon.
CSU (14-13, 0-1 MW) scored five runs in the first inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Haley Hutton got CSU on the board first, scoring from second base on a single by Taryn Arcarese. Arcarese scored on a single by Kristina Akiona, and then both Akiona and pinch runner Savannah Galbreath touched home on a two-run triple by Jaelyn Manzanares. Manzanares provided the fifth run, scoring on an infield error by the Broncos.
The Rams led through the first four innings, but a four-run top of the fifth inning gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead. Boise State used three home runs to power their offense in the game, including Rebekah Cervantes’ seventh of the season.
Manzanares nearly tied the game for CSU in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, the left-handed hitter recorded an opposite-field double off the top of the left field wall, needing only inches more height to be a game-tying home run. A ground out to shortstop would end CSU’s comeback chances in the next at bat.
CSU took a 6-1 lead going into the fourth inning, after Hutton drew a walk with the bases loaded, scoring pinch runner Kirsten Kauk.
The second game of the day was suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied at 7-7. The game will resume with two outs in the bottom half of the frame with Amber Nelson on third base and Maci Stouffer at the plate.
IN THEIR WORDS…
“I thought a couple of our steady bats went to sleep, so we didn’t get as much production from kids who have been producing a lot. Jaelyn had a great game and I was proud of her and I thought Bridgette came in and did a good job shutting them down late. In this conference, you have to play your best every night. Nobody is going to roll over and give anything to anybody. I am just going to keep helping play at the potential that I know they can play at. We just have to be confident in ourselves.” – Head Coach Jen Fisher’s general thoughts on the result of the first game of the series
“She’s a great senior and she’s been a great leader all four years, so it’s not surprising to see that from her. I’m happy for her because she works really hard and she’s always making adjustments to get better and she’s very coachable. I wish we could have had just six more inches, and it would have been tied up.” – Fisher on the play of Manzanares, and her near game-tying home run in the seventh inning
NOTES…
- Reinke’s 7 strikeouts marked the fourth time this season that she’s reached at least seven K’s. The loss was her first since Feb. 26.
- Manzanares went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and recorded a double (fifth of the season) and a triple (first of the season)
- Boise State pitcher Nicole Wilson entered the game in the second inning, and only allowed one run on three hits for the final six frames.
