Kaija Ornes and Taylor Steinke score for the Rams in the first half
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team battled to extra time for the eighth time this season to draw, 2-2, with the Boise State Broncos on Friday from the new CSU Soccer Field.
Â
Colorado State (3-7-5, 1-3-3 MW) scored both of its goals early, getting on the board with a goal from Kaija Ornes in the 10th minute and a tally by Taylor Steinke in the 25th minute. The Rams had multiple chances to break the deadlock late, including a shot off the crossbar by Emma Shinsky in the final minute of play.
Â
Boise State (8-5-3, 3-2-2 MW) was the first to score in what became an early back-and-forth matchup when Raimee Sherle scored in the sixth minute. A cross from the right side of the field found Sherle in the box, where she poked the ball to the lower right of the net for the contest's opening tally.
Â
Four minutes after Boise State took an early 1-0 edge, Ornes knotted the match up at one goal apiece on her first of the season. The junior forced a turnover at the top of the Broncos' 18-yard box, Ornes dribbled right at the keeper and fired the ball to her left past Boise State goalkeeper Janelle Flores.
Â
The Rams built off that goal 15 minutes later with another tally to take the lead and the momentum into halftime. Beth Plentl delivered the ball from the corner into the box, where Steinke headed the ball to the lower left half of the net for her second goal of the year and a 2-1 CSU lead.
Â
The Rams held Boise State at bay for the next 30 minutes, but the Broncos' Sherle scored her second of the match to level the score at two-all in the 56th minute. Sherle, who scored unassisted on the goal, dribbled right from the 18-yard box and shot right-to-left past a diving Hunter Peifer. The Rams nearly took the lead back in the 70th minute, as Caeley Lordemann booted a shot from the left side of the field that glanced off the Broncos' far post.
Â
Bailyn Furrow, Halley Havlicek, Lordemann, Peifer and Janelle Stone all played the entire 110 minutes of the double-overtime match. Peifer made eight saves, her second-highest single-match total. Ornes paced the Rams with five shots, including three on goal.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the pace of the game:
"It was a good game, and we had a plan tactically. We did a nice job with it and we had our chances. Certainly, Hunter (Peifer) made a few good saves. We were fortunate on our end (of the field), and unfortunate on their end (of the field). We scored two goals against a good team today. Raimee Sherle is outstanding for them, but I thought that Bailyn (Furrow) and Halley (Havlicek) did a pretty good job defending her specifically. She is special, and we grinded it out, but I thought Kaija (Ornes) had one of the best games I've seen in quite some time. I'm excited for our kids."
Â
On the team being able to respond after Boise State scored early:
"The goal they scored rattled between three players and dropped right to their feet. We haven't had that moment for us yet, but for us to respond the way we did…it was just another effort play. She (Kaija Ornes) nicked it away and then a kid fell and she buried it. We've missed those and I think at one point recently I told Kaija, 'just score, don't try and dribble around the keeper.' I think she heard me on her shoulder. It was a great finish."
NOTES
- Taylor Steinke's goal was the ninth scored by a Colorado State freshman this season.
- Three CSU freshmen now have multiple goals this season, including Steinke, Karli Eheart and Ally Murphy-Pauletto.
- Kaija Ornes' three shots on goal marks a new career high. Ornes had never previously recorded more than one shot on goal in a single match.
- Ornes' five shots ties her career high. She previously had five shots against New Mexico on Oct. 23, 2016.
