Rams close the season at home on Friday, Oct. 27 against Wyoming
SAN DIEGO – The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon from the SDSU Sports Deck.
Â
Sunday's action marked the Rams' (4-9-5, 2-5-3 MW) final road contest of the 2017 season. San Diego State (9-7-2, 6-2-2 MW) scored its goals in the 19th, 33rd and 52nd minutes.
Â
SDSU's Mia Root scored the match's opening goal on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. On a hard, low service from the corner, Root received the ball, dribbled to her right and fired past CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer. Root added her second in the 34th minute, as a San Diego State counterattack produced a cross to the front post and a tap-in for the freshman.
Â
The Rams' top opportunity to score came in the 40th minute on a free kick opportunity from just inside the Aztecs' half of the field. Beth Plentl served the ball into the box, where it was headed first by Rams' Emma Shinsky towards the net, and then off the head of Hannah Gerdin. Her header sailed just over the reach of SDSU goalkeeper Gabby English, but also just off the crossbar.
Â
The Aztecs tallied the match's final goal in the 52nd minute, as Angela Mitchell scored from just inside the goal area on a feed from Aliyah Utush.
Â
The Rams finished the game with seven shots, with Makenzi Taylor and Kaija Ornes accounting for two each. Both of Taylor's shots were on goal, as were each shot by Taylor Steinke and Lexi Swenson. Peifer finished the match with four saves.
Â
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"It was 95 degrees and we were chasing the game at halftime being down, two-nil. We put to use everyone who was on the trip. We fought and gave up three goals, three good goals. In some cases they could have been preventable; they weren't goalkeeper error. Certainly, we are a good enough team but we were chasing the game and weren't able to hold onto the ball much. When we did have it, we tried to make the killer pass, but just couldn't, and not for a lack of effort. It just wasn't to be today."
NOTES
- Makenzi Taylor recorded multiple shots on goal for the third time this season.
- Taylor also led the Rams with 83 minutes played. Janelle Stone logged the second-most minutes on Sunday, seeing the field for 80.
- Goalkeeper Paige Brandt made her fifth appearance of the season. The senior made one save after entering for Peifer in the 60th minute.
