The Rams notched six singles victories during the day, just dropping one
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On the first day of the Jon Messick Invitational the Colorado State women's tennis team notched eight of ten match victories continuing on the role they started last weekend at Creighton. The Rams are hosting four teams in South Dakota, Iowa State, Northern Colorado, and Wyoming in honor of CSU's former head coach Jon Messick.
The Rams in doubles action netted two of three contests with the pair of Priscilla Palermo/Alyssa Grijalva winning (6-2), and Emily Luetschwager/Emily Kolbow defeating their foe from Northern Colorado 7-5. Colorado State's pair of Solene Crawley/Emma Corwin were defeated by the duo from South Dakota 6-2. The Rams in the early going of the fall season are 10-2 in doubles contests.
Colorado State won six of seven singles matches during the afternoon which included four three-set wins. Colorado State returners in Emily Kolbow, Alyssa Grijalva, Solene Crawley all grabbed their singles matches while each of the new freshman came away with victories.
Grijalva after dropping her first set had to battle to win the second and third set needing a tiebreaker for both sets (4-6, 7-6, 7-6). CSU's Emily Luetschwager after also dropping the first set won the tiebreaker in the second set to seize the momentum. In the third set she shut down her foe from Iowa State 6-1 to take the victory (2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1).
Rams freshman Priscilla Palermo won in straight sets against her foe from Iowa State (6-0, 6-3), and Emma Corwin defeated her opponent from South Dakota (6-0, 6-2).
The tournament will have one overall winner at the end of the three days, where the winner will have won the most doubles and singles matches. The tiebreakers go down to matches lost and then to a coin flip.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Jarod Camerota
On today's performance
"They did well and played good doubles, and really they executed the tactics that we wanted. In singles, we competed well but there are things to work on still and doubles I felt we did well today. It was a good day overall for competition."
On winning four three set matches
"Seeing that was good, it shows that our team has some fight in them, and we hope that it continues throughout the entire weekend."
