Recap: CSU drops second game to Utah State, 4-0

Box Score

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams were beaten by the Utah State Aggies, 4-0, on Friday at Ram Field.

CSU (20-15, 6-8 MW) was shut out by Utah State (27-9, 10-3), stranding 11 runners on base.

The Aggies scored all four of their runs on a pair of home runs.

The game was scoreless through four innings, with CSU's Bridgette Hutton and Utah State's April Brown pitching gems early.

Utah State's Bailey Lewis ended the deadlock with a solo homer to deep center in the fifth inning. CSU had a prime opportunity of its own in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but Brown was able to force Lauren Buchanan into a pop-fly foul ball to end the inning.

The Aggies took further control in the following frame, as Paxton Provost knocked a three-run long ball to left center to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

CSU senior speedster Haley Hutton reached third base on two occasions but was unable to score each time. She reached third in the first after a leadoff walk, wild pitch and sacrifice fly moved her there, but that's as far as she got. Hutton then tripled off the right field wall in the third inning with only one out, but again, went no further. Hutton's shot was only 1-2 feet from going over and giving CSU a 1-0 lead at the time.

The Rams achieved two baserunners in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not advance them past second base.

IN THEIR WORDS…
"I think we have to keep pressure on. We have to keep our foot on the gas. We're not really backing each other up. We have to learn to keep our foot on the gas more. We'll have players that are collecting hits and getting on base throughout the lineup, but it'll be at sporadic times. We haven't quite had enough kids do that in a row to produce runs consistently." - CSU head coach Jen Fisher on the team being able to get runners aboard, but not bring them around to score

NOTES…
- Haley Hutton and Amber Nelson each reached base in the contest. Both players have reached base at least once in 34-of-35 contests.
- CSU had 11 baserunners in the game with only three hits. The Rams drew six walks and both Hutton and Nelson were hit by a pitch.
- Nelson recorded the first steal of her collegiate career in the third inning.
